RAF Typhoon jets have joined forces with French aircraft in a joint strike on an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in mountainous terrain just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a several approach shafts leading to the facility... initial indications suggest the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - established extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey commented. "Including them were a great many British troops on duty over Christmas and New Year. This action, to eliminate militants who endanger our safety, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces carried out what it termed a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports IS still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
