Fresh analysis indicates that patients who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a major medical journal points out that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals buying such drugs must be aware of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a reversion to starting weight in about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically have a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Doctors believe the way of the injections is key to understanding the amplified weight return.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Condition?
Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Testimonies
People who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful return of appetite.
"It was like a switch that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural support.
