The artist has handed over the complete sum of his twenty-five thousand pound Mercury Prize prize money to the trust for venues, which operates to protect the Britain's grassroots live music spots.

He was given the cheque on October 16 as his latest record his work was named the top album of the last 12 months.

Fender has opted to donate the funds to the Music Venues Trust, in appreciation of the vital role local spots played in his beginning days.

"As an artist wouldn't be doing my current career if it weren't for all the performances I played around the area, and beyond, when I was beginning," remarked Fender. "These locations are legendary, but they are in difficulty."

Beginning in 2023, at least 150 of these spaces have shut down – about one-sixth of the total UK scene.

Over the past year, major artists like Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the trust in its attempts to help venues survive, by including a minor surcharge to their ticket costs, which supports independent venues.

He also took part, raising over £100k on his live tour to support 38 local spots across the UK.

The donation supported locations that were facing potential shutdown due to issues stemming from flooding, fires and personal losses, as well as permit problems, court cases and neighbor objections.

Other venues were granted funding support in modernizing infrastructure and sound and lighting systems that directly benefitted performers and fans.

"The idea that revenue from shows in big venues helps the independent spots, where it all starts for performers like me, is just logical," the star has commented.

He is not the first artist to contribute his Mercury Prize prize money to worthy causes.

When the band won the prize in 1996 for their release their work, lead singer Cocker stated that the band would donate their winnings to the non-profit the charity.

During 2002, rapper and singer the artist divided her prize across a few charities, such as the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell charity.

"Additionally, I gave a thousand pounds to Highgate Newtown, to their gymnastics class, because I trained in gymnastics when I was younger and they needed updated gear," Ms Dynamite told outlets.

Two years ago, the band donated their prize money to the local youth club that supported their band, alongside other grassroots music organisations.

And winners that year the group gave their award to a MS organization after a close contact was diagnosed the illness.

"Winning was sufficient," remarked vocalist Heather Small. "The money was the cherry on top but we didn't require the cherry, because we had the honor. So our victory affected another person's life."

Last week, the trust announced it had rescued a couple of small stages in the South East, by bringing them into public stewardship.

The first in that area and the second in Bristol were bought under the public acquisition initiative, which is supported by the arts council and music fans who acquire "shares" in the buildings.
