Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

Whenever a major awards ceremony approaches, you'll find a clamor for the addition of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and fill the passions of followers who have specialized interests.

Another commentator previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front because like all single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case supporting my request is the most urgent and significant. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it remains highly personal, and it will always spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types actually cover many game types, and you can find room for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of this year’s best games, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated in any category that year
  • Another creative title was excluded during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title got ignored recently
  • Just some puzzle games managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often small games, however the design of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most engaged experiences worldwide maintaining this status for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with famous sandbox experiences for the title of most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and engaging with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these are games without proper classification in important events. Logic title developers are working at the demanding boundary interactive creation, creating some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait generations.
